I hope everyone is feeling great despite the long lasting quarantine. I want to start off by apologizing to you guys. I’ve been absent for a few days and trust me I’ve missed you. ~Story time~. So like I said in the intro, I had an important test to take last week and I really couldn’t focus on anything else but this exam. I’ve experienced something during test day and I think it’s really important to talk about it.
What happened? As I was getting ready to take the test, I was petrified about the idea that I’d have to speak in a foreign language faced to a computer and people would be grading me. The most stressful part was the fact that I’d have to come up with a short, elaborated answer on a subject in a matter of 15 seconds. I had asked a friend to help me. Everyday she’d send me a subject and I’d try to answer in a voicenote. No matter how hard I’ve tried, 15 seconds were just not enough. So everyday I was like you know what? I will just focus on the other questions of the exam because I know I will mess up on this one. I’ve repeated it many times although my friends were telling me not to worry about it. On test day, I got my topic and 15 seconds to prepare my answer. Unfortunately it happened like I’d predicted. Time wasn’t enough. I messed up.
I’m pretty sure a lot of you have been in a situation similar to this. Here are 5 ways our negative thoughts influence our lives.
1. Jumping to conclusions. When you have negative thoughts you’re always jumping to conclusions. You won’t take the time to analyze the situation you’ll just create a whole ending in your head. I could’ve practiced more and be confident about my abilities but I just decided that I would fail and that’s what exactly happened.
2. Catastrophizing. I found this word in an article I was reading and I’m not sure if it exists but it’s when you view or present a situation worse than it actually is. Negative thoughts make you see the bad side of a situation by giving it a negative spin. We look at the situation and we anticipate the worse possible ending.
3. Downgrading. Someone who thinks negatively has a low self esteem. Your negative thoughts will make you lack of confidence and think low of yourself. “I can’t do it” is the sentence that best describes what negative thoughts do to our minds when we face a pretty simple circumstance.
4. Sadness. When you think you can’t do something and you start downgrading yourself, sadness comes in the picture. There are times where I’d start crying during an exam because in my mind the exam is hard and I can’t do it. But once I’ve calmed myself, I realize that there wasn’t anything hard about it. That’s how we should face anything that comes our way. It might look difficult at first but take a breath, you got it. God never puts us in situations we cannot overcome. Remember that.
5. Consistent stress. Negative thinking often brings stress because you’re always thinking about the bad side or the worse side of the situation that you’ve created in your head. I was super stressed about my exam because I’d already jumped to the conclusion that I will fail.
