Time to take a break

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog. Long time no see… I hope everyone is okay and that the month of August was good to each and every one of you.

Before I begin with today’s article, I want to take the time to apologize for the late post. I haven’t been feeling well ; I was treating a foot injury and in the meantime I lost yet two other family members. Unfortunately, because of this I had to take an involuntary break from the blog. Safe to say, this year hasn’t been kind to me.

I’ve been feeling really tired since the year started, mentally and physically. Since I started a new job last year, I wasn’t eligible yet to take my yearly break, and in the meantime I started experiencing all those losses. When it was finally time to take my break, I began pushing the date. My boss kept asking me when I was planning to leave, and I always had an excuse. I did not realize it at the time, but it was an unhealthy way for me to cope with what I was feeling emotionally. I didn’t want to stay home because it would bring back too many memories. So I went to work everyday and would often submerge myself with tasks to keep my mind busy. Nonetheless, I felt tired, my body started feeling weak ; waking up every morning was a hassle.

That is when I started experiencing the pain in my foot. It started swelling and the swelling would not come down. I have been experiencing the pain for months now, but this time it has intensified to the point where I could only walk and stand only on the tip of my toes. I knew it was time for me to take a break, and the doctor advised me to do so.

My convalescence period made me realize that our body in fact knows when it’s time to take a break and it will find a way to manifest it to us when we don’t want to listen. Every time someone would ask me what happened to me when they see my cast, I would often say “It is a foot injury and the cause is all those bad news I have been receiving this year”. At first it was a joke, but then I started doing my research to understand the connection between our body and our mental health, and how one can influence the other.

Here are 6 signs we need to look out for :

  1. Mood swings. You may notice that you are more emotional than usual. The slightest thing irritates you, you basically have zero patience nor time to deal with people. This will create unnecessary conflicts and affect your relationships with others.
  2. Extreme fatigue. Have you ever woken up after a good 8 hours of sleep and still felt like you have been ran over by a truck? Sometimes I even wondered if maybe less hours of sleep would feel better. The body feels sore and you may find yourself often waking up with headaches. It will feel like you are running on low energy, even breathing becomes tiring.
  3. Lack of concentration. When our mind is tired, it cannot process even the slightest peace of information. No matter how much we try, it will be completely impossible to focus. It is a sign that our body is influencing our mental abilities and that we need to slow down.
  4. Weakened immune system. When our body is tired, it can no longer fight common colds and/or infections. Not only do we catch them easily but it also becomes harder to recover. This will result in a prolonged recover process.
  5. Disrupted sleep. Some mental health issues like anxiety, stress and depression can lead to sleep disturbances. When our mind is preoccupied, it will be difficult to rest. You will wake up multiple times during the night and sometimes even falling asleep is impossible.
  6. Loss of appetite. No matter how much you love food, when you are too tired, there will come a time where you may not feel hungry. You won’t even be interested in your favorite food.

If you are experiencing some symptoms and no cure seem to help, it may be time for you to take a break. Our body will let us know that it cannot perform how it’s supposed to. Do not ignore these warnings as they can lead to a more catastrophic crash, which will make our recovery time a challenging journey.  Listen to your body and give it the rest it requires. By doing so, you will live a healthier, more balanced, and fulfilling life. So, the next time your body sends out those unmistakable signals, don’t fight it – take that well-deserved break and recharge for the journey ahead.

Before I finish, I want to share with everyone who missed it, that I was invited to my first event as a blogger. Recently, Rotaract club invited me to talk for the international blog day. It was an amazing experience and the live was saved for those of you who couldn’t attend. I’ll add the link below so you can go check it out.
